On 15-16 April 2025, UIC participated in the 11th meeting on Transport Statistics organised by the International Transport Forum (ITF) at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) headquarters in Paris.
The ITF’s annual meeting on transport statistics brings together experts from OECD member countries, along with representatives from international governmental and non-governmental organisations. Within a more streamlined and coordinated international framework, the goal is to pinpoint shared challenges and develop solutions to various transport statistics-related issues.
There were two main topics on the agenda. The first focused on urban transport, particularly the measurement of new mobility patterns and the use of derived statistics for practical applications, such as optimising investment strategies in cities. As part of this, urban freight and logistics were also discussed, emphasising the role of metrics in improving the sustainability of urban freight by reducing congestion and emissions.
The second main topic addressed the use of data in times of crisis to support informed decision-making, and how to enhance the resilience of transport systems. A series of presentations and case studies were given by government experts from the United States, Brazil, and the Netherlands, as well as by researchers from the universities of Delft, Poznań, and Tartu. Discussions also centred on ensuring the continuity of transport networks in the face of disruptions and improving their adaptability.
Other subjects were also covered, including innovation in data measurement and collection, transport modelling, and future projections – which are highlighted in the upcoming presentation of the ITF Transport Outlook 2025 report.
At the end of the meeting, in the “Updates from participating countries and organisations on relevant activities and initiatives” section, UIC presented its Statistics Platform’s ongoing work, along with the newly collected data. It also highlighted ongoing partnerships with the International Energy Agency (IEA) on energy consumption, and with ITF, Eurostat, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the development of the Glossary of Transport Statistics.
