Delegates of UNECE Member States presented, among others, their work and statistics on road traffic safety in their respective countries.
Ukraine for example: each year 5000 individuals die on Ukrainian roads of which more than 30% are pedestrians. This is why Ukraine undertook many initiatives during the 2nd global UN road safety week held from 6 – 12 May 2013 including at level crossings – the Ukrainian Road Safety Association being an active partner of ILCAD. UIC also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop specifically dedicated to level crossing safety during their international conference on Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety organised from 19 – 21 June 2013 in Kiev (see http://uic.org/com/uic-e-news/352). The conference participants adopted the Kiev Declaration.
The WP1 Secretariat reported on the events that took place in Geneva during the 2nd global UN road safety week held from 6 – 12 May 2013 including ILCAD, see http://www.uic.org/com/uic-e-news/345/).
The WP1 Secretariat also provided the audience an update on the status of the new “Group of Experts on improving safety at level crossings”, whose establishment was approved on 11 July by the UNECE Executive Committee. The first session should therefore take place on 20 January 2014; two additional meetings are foreseen on 12 May and 26 September 2014 at the UN in Geneva. The UNECE WP1 secretariat will send invitations to governments and other relevant stakeholders as mentioned in its terms of reference.
The 67th session of the UNECE Working Party on Road Traffic Safety (WP1) will be held from 4 – 6 December 2013 in New Delhi.
