An engineering graduate of France’s prestigious Mines ParisTech, Jean-Pierre Farandou first worked for the US mining firm AMAX in Denver (Colorado) before joining SNCF in 1981.

After making his way through different managerial positions from production through to marketing, he was eventually appointed as project manager to launch the Paris-Lille highspeed link in 1993. Immediately afterwards, Farandou established and headed Thalys International in Brussels, occupying the position of Managing Director between 1993 and 1998.

Following this mandate, he was made Director of Executive Management HR from 1998 to 2000 and then Deputy Director to the Main Lines Division from 2000 to 2002.
Subsequently, Farandou took up a regional operations management role, heading up France’s largest TER (regional) network in the Rhones-Alps region just before being made Managing Director of Keolis in Lyon, and overseeing its bus, metro and tram network.

In October 2006, Jean-Pierre Farandou was appointed as Director for all SNCF local operations, covering Transilien (Paris suburban trains) and TER (interregional trains) operations, and other Keolis/Effia Group activities. In August 2012, Farandou was made Chairman of the Board of Keolis.

As of 1 November 2019, Jean-Pierre Farandou is Chairman of the Board of Management at SNCF, and Chief Executive Officer of SNCF Transport.

UIC congratulates Mr Farandou on his appointment and wishes him every success in his new role.
