The UIC’s first Africa TrainRail hackathon, was held in association with the IFF Railway training institute and ONCF between 2 and 11 February under the theme "How can rail be resilient to pandemics”.

This hackathon forms part of a series of world-wide events being organised by UIC as part of a range of measures targeting universities and railway undertakings to raise the attractiveness of railways. The first hackathon was held in 2021.

The main purpose of this hackathon, launched by the UIC TEDP platform, was to catalyse the creation of new projects and stimulate innovative ideas to cope with the pandemic in the railway sector by inviting participants to present prototype products, applications or services.

The competition organised both on and offline at the venue in Morocco allowed 41 participants from 6 different countries to take part in the event.

The competitors were divided into 7 teams mixing professionals from the African railway sector and students from Moroccan engineering schools.

The finals were held on Saturday 19 February at IFF. 7 teams representing 6 African countries took turns to pitch their projects to a panel of experts.

The competition was tough between the highly motivated young teams, who each presented prototypes and 3D simulations which benefited from input and advice from 5 professional coaches.

The jury made special awards to 3 teams for their outstanding work.

The winning team will represent the Africa region for the final round to be held during the UIC World Congress on Railway Training (WCRT 2022).

UIC congratulates all participants and the winning team!
